Treasured Trees
Ayrshire’s Treasured Trees
Welcome to Ayrshire’s Treasured Trees. The trees described here are all special to the people of Ayrshire. They have been selected for a variety of reasons -some are impressive to look at, others have strong historical or folklore connections and others are in a setting where they give pleasure to many. We hope you enjoy them.

The trees are in three categories - the Peoples Choice, the School Winners and the Heritage Trees.

The Peoples Choice trees were all nominated by the people of Ayrshire, who were invited to tell us about their favourite trees and why they are important to them.

The School Winners are the winning entries to a story-writing competition, which was open to Ayrshire Primary 6 and 7 pupils. The subject could include anything but it had to be related to a real tree. The four winning stories are reproduced here in full by kind permission of the pupils and their schools.

Joining all of these very special trees are the six Heritage Trees in Ayrshire that were identified during the Heritage Trees of Scotland project held in 2002. This project asked the Scottish public to nominate the most important heritage trees in Scotland. 100 trees were selected in all and included in the book “Heritage Trees of Scotland”, Rodger, Stokes & Ogilvie (2003) - not only are these six trees important in Ayrshire but also across Scotland.

Many thanks to all of you who entered stories or nominated your own favourite tree.
